Aj. Hernandez et al., CULTURAL CONTRIBUTIONS AS A COMPLEMENT TO ECONOMIC INCENTIVES FOR PEOPLE INVOLVED IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT-PROJECTS IN RURAL-AREAS, Landscape and urban planning, 27(2-4), 1993, pp. 231-236
Information on an environmental problem by itself is not likely to lea
d to a behavioural change in people unless there is some incentive for
change. The aim of this study is to propose a specific programme for
various groups in rural areas to take part in a project on alternative
s to the present changes of land use. The groups mainly consist of far
mers. schoolchildren and women. Not only is the economic contribution
from the European Community agricultural policy taken into account, bu
t at the same time a cultural incentive is to be implemented. Sustaina
ble development in rural areas does not seem to be achievable if it is
based on the results of scientific research alone. Specific environme
ntal education is necessary for the groups of people directly involved
in carrying out this kind of development.
