Abstract
The survival rates of 18 species of wide-ranging Australian passerines were calculated by using recapture data provided by the Australian Bi rd Banding Scheme for birds older than one year. On average, birds liv ing in relatively lower rainfall areas (<760 mm annually) lived 15% lo nger than birds living in higher rainfall areas (>760 mm). Out of 18 s pecies examined, only three do not conform with this general trend.
