The addition of Sm2BaCuO5 to YBa2Cu3O6+x has been shown to increase th
e transport critical current density. Because Sm2BaCuO5 and CuO do not
coexist at equilibrium, additions of Sm2BaCuO5 to YBa2Cu3O6+x cause a
reaction with the Cu rich liquid phase usually present during sinteri
ng. This forms crystalline phases that do not completely cover the gra
in boundaries. Sm was found to be homogeneously distributed in the YBa
2Cu3O6+x matrix. Additions of 5 mole% Sm2BaCuO5 and sintering temperat
ures of 950 degrees C are effective in increasing the transport critic
al current density.
