Abstract
We use the symmetric formulation of boundary integral equations to sol ve mixed boundary value problems based on a Galerkin discretization. T his leads to a skew-symmetric and positive definite system of linear e quations, which may be solved via iterative schemes. Toeplitz type pre conditioners are used to bound the spectral condition number of the di screte system. Numerical examples confirm the theoretical results. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
