Angular distributions of cross section and vector analyzing power have
been measured for the Be-9((p) over right arrow p, d)Be-8 and Be-9((p
) over right arrow, alpha)Li-6 reactions for 77 less than or equal to
E-p less than or equal to 321 keV. Previous work has suggested that th
e low-energy cross section is enhanced by the E-x = 6.57 MeV subthresh
old level in B-10. The analyzing power measurements are particularly s
ensitive to the presence of the subthreshold level, leading to a defin
itive test of the hypothesis. The data are analyzed in terms of R-matr
ix and direct reaction calculations. We find that the magnitude and an
gular distribution of the Be-9(p,d)Be-8 reaction at very low energies
can be explained by the direct reaction mechanism without any contribu
tion from the subthreshold resonance. The implications of these result
s for the stellar reaction rate of the Be-9(p, d)Be-8 and Be-9(p, alph
a)Li-6 reactions are discussed.
