T. Qian et al., A METHOD FOR COMPARING DEGRADATION OF BORON-TRIFLUORIDE AND HELIUM DETECTORS IN NEUTRON AND GAMMA-FIELDS, IEEE transactions on nuclear science, 45(3), 1998, pp. 636-642
A method developed to measure the degradation of neutron detectors in
neutron and gamma fields has been applied to five models of boron trif
luoride (BF3) detectors from major suppliers, and to a special helium
(He-3) detector model. The detectors tested all have about the same no
minal thermal neutron sensitivity and overall dimensions. The results
showed widely different neutron and gamma durability for BF3 models, a
n undesirable time-dependent gamma degradation followed by recovery fo
r some BF3 models, and very robust performance of the modified He-3 de
tector.
