The DNA of bacteriophage 9NA, a virulent phage of Salmonella typhimuri
um, is linear, double stranded, circularly permuted and is approximate
ly 56 kilobase pairs long. The 9NA genome is partially methylated. A p
hysical map of the DNA has been constructed using the restriction endo
nucleases BamHI, BglII, SmaI and PvuII. The putative packaging end ('p
ac' end) and the direction of packaging of the concatemeric DNA has be
en postulated.
