Abstract
The DNA of the temperate bacteriophage Aa phi 23 isolated from the ora l bacterium Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans was examined structur ally both in the phage head and in the prophage. The DNA in phage part icles comprises 44 kb linear molecules with a terminal redundancy of 1 .6 kb, which represent circular permutations. Thus, DNA is packaged in to phage heads by the headful mechanism. The Aa phi 23 prophage is int egrated into the host chromosome.
