This paper presents a digital monoscopic system designed to determine
the deformations of a test field to investigate mechanic phenomena in
reinforced earth. The geotechnic problem is briefly presented and the
following photogrammetric problem is described in detail. The solution
strategy and its implementation are pointed out, with particular emph
asis on the parameters that are critical for the results. The system d
etermines automatically the image co-ordinates of the centres of circl
es of known dimensions that substitute soil particles in a physical mo
del. Position determination is based on the analysis of mean and stand
ard deviation of the grey level of a digital image representing a sect
ion of the soil. After a brief description of the system implementatio
