Chemokines are believed to be the long-sought soluble mediators of sel
ective lymphocyte recruitment. As most selectin-integrin interactions
are nonselective, it is thought that the discrimination seen during ly
mphocyte infiltration into tissues is brought about by the actions of
distinct chemokines. Developments over the past year have demonstrated
the expanding roles of these factors in lymphocyte chemoattraction; n
ormal trafficking, and viral immunity.
