G. Farkas et al., INFRARED ELECTRON PHOTOEMISSION FROM A GOLD SURFACE, Journal of physics. B, Atomic molecular and optical physics, 31(10), 1998, pp. 461-468
Interaction of a moderately intense (I approximate to 10 MW cm(-2)), i
nfrared (lambda = 12 mu m), short pulse (1 ps) free-electron laser bea
m with a gold surface is found to cause an intense electron emission (
on the order of 1 mA cm(-2)) and a corresponding 'hot' electron spectr
a (up to a few eV). We show that heating of the electrons through clas
sical acceleration by the laser electric field in the presence of coll
isions is a possible explanation for such observations.
