Abstract
We have investigated mechanical alloying by interaction of zinc powder with copper in a rotating drum. Grinding down of the powder particles and penetration of the chippings into the surface layers of the coppe r occurs in the early stages. The most disperse zinc chippings are dis solved during simultaneous plastic deformation of the copper and the z inc. Then a thin layer of the intermetallic compound gamma-Cu5Zn8 is f ormed by reactive interdiffusion. We discuss the mechanisms for mechan ical alloying.
