Plasma spraying combined with chemical transformations is a method for
the synthesis of new materials. A new class of coatings can be formed
with its use, into whose composition enter fine particles of nitrides
, carbides, or oxides synthesized in the plasma. A thermodynamic analy
sis of the formation of aluminum, silicon, and titanium nitrides is gi
ven. The defining role of kinetic factors in obtaining the desired pro
ducts is explained, The extent of transformation depends on the degree
of evaporation of the sprayed powder. Experimental data confirm the v
alidity of the theoretical assumptions.
