The TME of whole or ground linseed with or without builder's sand was
determined using precision-fed Single Comb White Leghorn roosters. Exc
reta were collected 24 and 48 h after initial feeding. It was observed
that the TME of ground linseed was higher than that of whole linseed.
Feeding builder's sand resulted in greater TME (P < 0.05) compared to
feeding the grain alone in either whole or ground form. However, ther
e was no effect of grinding when builder's sand was fed. The data sugg
est that dietary supplementation of poultry feed with builder's sand c
an be alternative to grinding oil seeds. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V
