Abstract
We report x-ray-absorption measurements near the Yb L(III) absorption edge of YbAl3, YbCu2Si2, YbAgCu4, and related compounds. Our results s uggest that the bulk Yb valence changes with temperature in a manner c onsistent with predictions of the single impurity Anderson model. We d iscuss the relationship between these results and recent valence-band photoemission results in the same compounds where the existence of tem perature dependence has been disputed.
