The present study aims at providing insights into the understanding of
the formation of bubbles at a submerged orifice under constant flow c
onditions, in both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. A rigorous theo
retical model was developed for describing the non-spherical bubble fo
rmation as well as the detachment at the orifice. The results predicte
d by this model compare satisfactorily with the experimental investiga
tion. However a deviation was observed in elastic fluids with the incr
ease of gas flow rates when the memory effects become important. (C) A
