Noise is assessed by the time-average sound level, L-AT(x,D). The proc
ess of noise generation on a bridge and on an embankment is characteri
zed by two parameters, <(lambda)over bar> and <(mu)over bar>, which ca
n be estimated from simultaneous measurements, L-AT(x(1),D) and L-AT(x
(2),D). We assume that turbulence destroys the coherent interference b
etween the direct and reflected waves. Thus, within 100 m of the track
, geometrical spreading governs noise propagation. In the present stud
y, there is satisfactory agreement between theory and experimental res
ults. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
