A procedure for efficient computation of nonuniform sound fields in a
rectangular room is presented in this paper. The inhomogeneous three-d
imensional wave equation, which includes the presence of a time-harmon
ic point source in the room, is considered. A convenient transformatio
n from the three-dimensional differential equation to the one-dimensio
nal one is used. The resulting equation is solved applying the analogy
with an electrical transmission line. The final solution is obtained
in the form of double infinite sum. The proposed approach can be appli
ed not only in the case of rigid walls, but also in the case of two op
posite walls having arbitrary admittances. Compared to the standard tr
iple-sum normal-mode expression this solution provides far more effici
ent numerical calculations.
