ANALYSIS OF POLARIZATION MODE DISPERSION OF SINGLE-MODE ELLIPTIC-COREOPTICAL FIBERS

Analysis of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) of elliptical core sing le mode fibers used in optical communication networks are presented. T he measurements are performed both by a frequency method, based on the Jones matrix eigenanalysis for different light wavelengths at the inp ut of the component, and by an interferometric time domain method. The sensitivity of PMD to mechanical stress for different optical fibers and for different core ellipticities are determined. Finally, results and analysis concerning the PMD variation as function of circularity d efaults of optical fiber cores are given. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B. V.
