The high-frequency excitations of the molecular insulator C-60 are inv
estigated theoretically. The model of a quantum well rolled into a sph
ere is used to calculate the dipole (multipole in the general case) mo
des of an individual C-60 cluster. If the spectrum and oscillator stre
ngths of the collective modes of an individual cluster are known, the
microscopic continuum approach can be used to calculate the spectrum o
f delocalized excitations in a cluster crystal. Then the ordinary diel
ectric constant formalism permits calculation of the optical character
istics of the material in the vacuum ultraviolet region studied. (C) 1
