Catalytic epoxidation by dioxygen of (Z)-17-ethylideneandrostane in th
e presence of dioxoruthenium(vl) tetramesitylporphyrinate affords as m
ajor products the two 17,20-epoxides in a non-stereoselective process;
the occurrence of a minor competitive pathway leading to isomeric ole
fins suggests the existence of a ruthenium(II) porphyrin intermediate.
