Abstract
Urethral diseases of male dogs are relatively rare and almost no repor ts can be found in the international literature. However urethral dise ases of female dogs are more frequently observed and many reports have been published about the difficulties. The present study has been dea ling with the urethral diseases of male dogs. With a period of 26 year s in Karben, urethral diseases were observed in 27 male dogs. All the cases were categorized according to the age, race, character of illnes s, location of the disease and were classified according to the sympto ms and compared to each other to find some similarities. The following were found: 15 males were older than 10 years, 11 animals were 6 to 1 0 years old. 15 animals showed some changes in the urethra. Three male s had stones, 5 males had an urethral infection. Of the 27 males one b eagle had an urethral infection. 19 animals had urethral tumors. 14 of them had adenocarcinoma, 3 of them with metastases. The incidence of urethral diseases was much higher in older than in younger patients. B eagle, Airedale terrier and Doberman were more often affected than oth er breeds. German shepherds were rarely affected. The influence of age and race on the development of urethral diseases is still unknown. Ne ither the character of urethral changes are yet completely known in ma les. Although the authors have got only few experiences on this import ant diseases, they would like to call the attention to deal with and r eport more about it.
