Abstract
We suggest that it is imprudent to do away entirely with effective cha rges for nucleons in normal-parity states when calculating the B(E2) v alues of deformed nuclei within the symplectic pseudo-SU(3) model. Suc h effective charges are needed to take into account the contributions to the B(E2) values resulting from the quadrupole polarization of the spherical shape attributed in this model to nucleons in abnormal-parit y states.
