Proton and alpha-particle correlations with evaporation residues were
measured over the complete angular range in the interaction of a 450-M
eV Ca-40 beam with a C-12 target. Comparisons of the data with predict
ions of the statistical model and expectations for complete fusion fro
m the kinematics provide clear and consistent evidence of incomplete f
usion due to preequilibrium emission of both protons and alpha particl
es from the C-12 target. However, there is conflicting evidence both f
or and against preequilibrium emission from the projectile.
