Exerimental studies are described to quantify high temperature chemica
l aspects of waste disposal and environmental clean-up. Two main facil
ities are considered: Osprey: to characterize high temperature vapors,
Harrier: to quantify the treatment of radioactive waste in a molten m
etal environment These facilities are supported by matrix isolation-in
frared spectroscopy, thermal analysis (DTA/TG/EGA) and thermodynamic a
nd kinetic modeling. Examples of treatment of various radioactive wast
e streams are described.
