Modulation instability (MI) effects are analyzed in the context of WDM
optical communication systems. me show how the interplay between four
-wave mixing and modulation instability results in a modulation of the
channel power as a function of the the channel spacing as well as the
propagated distance. This modulation can cause severe power penalties
