The limitations of acoustic surveys using echosounders in shallow wate
rs are discussed in terms of both vertical and horizontal beaming. The
advantages of multibeam sonar applied in a vertical plane throughout
the water column for shallow water surveying are outlined and illustra
ted with examples taken from a survey of a shallow water tropical lago
on in Cuba even under conditions of rough weather. (C) 1998 Elsevier S
