Abstract
Free-standing smectic films of a liquid crystal exhibiting the hexatic smectic-Lphase have been studied using electron diffraction and optic al textures. The films show a rich phase diagram as a function of thic kness and temperature. A possible phase transition within the surface smectic-Lphase is observed.
