Motivated by a desire to control the turbulent boundary layer via feed
back, the effect on a naturally occuring streamwise vortex pair of a p
erturbing pair produced by an actuator is examined. It is shown how th
e resulting velocity field modifies coefficients in the low-dimensiona
l models of Aubry et al. [J. Fluid Mech. 192, 115 (1988)], and a contr
ol strategy is sketched that reduces the bursting rate and hence the t
urbulent drag in the model problem.
