Abstract
From Mossbauer effect, lattice constant and susceptibility measurement s we show that Eu is nearly divalent in Eu(Cu, Ag, Au)(P, As, Sb). How ever, the L(III) x-ray absorption spectra consist of a pronounced doub le structure, suggesting a non-integral mean Eu valence. The high-ener gy structure in the L(III)-edge spectra is interpreted as a final-stat e (shake-up) effect. This finding strongly supports the existence of f inal-state effects in the L(III) x-ray absorption spectra of divalent Eu compounds as previously reported by Sampathkumaran and co-workers i n EuPd2P2.
