In a postal survey 221 mothers of children with genetic syndromes repo
rt on their interactional and emotional stress. Results from the ''Par
enting Stress Index'' reveal a high interactional stress level (Child
Domain) and acceptance problems, but do not show general emotional dis
tress. 46% score in the high range and should be viewed as in need of
psychological assistance. Degree of stress depends on degree of mental
retardation, specific syndrome diagnosis and quality of family relati
ons. Implications for psychological support are discussed.
