S. Baltova et V. Vassileva, PHOTOCHEMICAL BEHAVIOR OF NATURAL SILK - II - MECHANISM OF FIBROIN PHOTODESTRUCTION, Polymer degradation and stability, 60(1), 1998, pp. 61-65
The change in the amino acid content of fibroin during irradiation was
investigated. The amino acids glycine, alanine, tyrosine and serine a
re shown to participate in the photo-oxidation of silk. The formation
of chromophoic products is retarded in the presence of a UV-absorber.
A linear correlation was established between yellowness index and the
carbonyl group content in silk as a new relation in the theory of prot
ein yellowing. The experimental evidence suggests that the formation o
f alpha-ketoacyl groups is the main mechanism of the photochemical beh
aviour of fibroin. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Limited. All rights reser
