The (2X2)p2mg and c(2X2n) structures induced by oxygen adsorption on R
h(110) have been examined by means of scanning tunneling microscopy. T
he real-space images show the glide and centered symmetry required by
the diffraction patterns, as well as substrate reconstruction. In addi
tion, a metastable (6X2) structure and a number of defects have been i
dentified and characterized, including an anti-phase domain wall in th
e (2X2) structure. Where a step defect separates two c(2X8) domains, t
hey tend to adopt a specific morphological relationship.
