The temperature distribution within a wide-gap (3 mm) continuous free-
flow electrophoresis (CFFE) chamber was investigated by direct measure
ments. The walls of the chambers consisted of Plexiglas and thermocoup
les were used as temperature sensors. The study of different operating
and heat dissipating conditions revealed that lateral temperature gra
dients arise in CFFE chambers in addition to an axial increase in temp
erature of 0.25 degrees C per Watt of electric power and per minute of
residence time in the absence of cooling.
