Spatial variations in soil properties under four alpine plant communit
ies are studied. With an increase in the distance between the points o
f soil sampling from 1 to 7 m, the differences in soil properties rema
in the same. Averaged characteristics of soil properties under differe
nt plant communities do not uniquely correlate with variance of these
properties. A correlation between soil properties and the presence of
particular plant species in phytocenoses is found only in a few cases.
