We prepared polyacrylonitrile-palladium(PAN-Pd) complexes in which pal
ladium is coordinated with approximately 2 nitrile groups and has a mi
xed valency (Pd(0) + Pd(I) + Pd(II)). The complexes contain small pall
adium aggregates (diameter ca. 50 angstrom) which are rather stable du
e to the coordination of palladium to the polymer. The PAN-Pd complexe
s are highly active and stable catalysts for the oxidation of olefins
in the presence of cocatalysts like CuCl2.2H2O. They could be recycled
5 times without loss of activity in the oxidation of 1-heptene.
