The competitive binding of fluorescence-tagged poly(methacrylate) poly
anions and poly(phosphate) polyanions with different poly(N-alkyl-4-vi
nylpyridinium) polycation quenchers (alkyl = methyl, ethyl and propyl)
was studied in the region 278 divided by 333 K by fluorescence quench
ing technique. The equilibrium of this interpolyelectrolyte substituti
on reaction proved to be temperature sensitive except in the case when
the poly(N-methyl-4-vinylpyridinium) polycation was used. Thermodynam
ic parameters of the reaction were determined. The possibility of effe
ctive temperature control of the interpolyelectrolyte reaction might b
e important for understanding, prediction and utilization of transform
ation processes of complex particles formed by electrostatically compl
ementary (biological) macromolecules.
