The design and fabrication of a miniature silicon backplane colour liq
uid crystal display (LCD) for use in head-mounted and projection displ
ay systems is discussed The display was developed on a UK collaborativ
e programme (SLIMDIS) and has a 1024 x 768 away of pixels on a 12 mu m
pitch, giving an active area of 12 x 9mm. The use of double metal pla
narization to produce a high pixel fill-factor and enhanced optical po
wer handling is described
