Abstract
We consider phases of spontaneously broken gauge theories in which dif
ferent types of topological excitations, like flux tubes, monopoles et
c., coexist. We analyze the topological relations which exist between
the charges, and give a description of the admissible core deformation
s in terms of certain cohomology groups that occur in obstruction theo
ry. Simple examples are worked out in detail.
