This paper presents a theoretical study to model the formation and rem
elting of a solid polymer layer that is formed due to the introduction
of a continuous surface (here a wire) into a polymer melt bath positi
oned ahead of a plasto-hydrodynamic unit prior to drawing or coating.
The model gives the temperature profile for the wire and the temperatu
re gradient boundary layer thickness, which is a combination of differ
ent phases. Also, the influence of pre-heating of the wire is given on
the rate at which the solid polymer melts. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science
