Abstract
The skin lesions as elicited by the local Shwartzman reaction in rabbi ts resemble those seen in human purpura fulminans. Human protein C (80 0 IU/kg i.v.; Ceprotin(R), Immune AG, Vienna) as well as activated hum an protein C (400 U/kg i.v.) were able to mitigate skin lesions in rab bits. The Shwartzman reaction is discussed as a predicitive model for purpura fulminans in humans.
