Ageing effect on PANI-HCl have been analyzed through transport propert
ies and structural studies. Results are quantitatively interpreted in
a model where PANI-HCl appears as an heterogeneous material in which c
onducting islands are separated by insulating barriers. Ageing seems t
o act by a nibbling of conducting islands leading to a insulating aged
material with a struture similar to PANI-EB. Elemental analyses and F
TIR characterization link this picture with chemical degradations (oxi
dation, chemical crosslinking, dedoping and ring chlorination).
