Abstract
The paper starts by tracing the history of CCITT modem recommendations (the V-series) from the 1960s until the present. This leads into a re view of the methods of implementation used in current products. With c ost minimisation in mind, an alternative design approach is then outli ned which offers potential advantages for the simpler, yet currently s till popular, modem specifications. The paper concludes with a glimpse into the future by outlining the latest CCITT V.fast proposals.
