A resonant wave particle interaction is considered for a plasma with d
ensity and wave intensity inhomogenieties, formed by the modulational
instability producing localized wave structures called cavitons. An ad
ditional damping due to these caviton-like structures containing inten
se wave activity is found and a general approach is developed for part
icle acceleration by an ensemble of soliton-like structures.
