Abstract
The ground-state phases of a chiral model which describes orientationa l order of a single stack of planar objects with threefold symmetry su bject to a local anisotropy field are examined. The results are used t o interpret experimental data on columnar discotic liquid crystals whi ch exhibit triangular arrays of helically ordered molecular stacks.
