The results of this study are based on a sample of 35 schizophrenic pa
tients (20 patients in a therapy group, and 15 in a control group). Th
e subjects were randomly assigned to one patient group. Patients assig
ned to therapy group received a one year-long integrated psychological
program, which consisted of four IPT subprograms (Brenner et al., 199
4), and psychoeducational and behavioural training sessions. Psychoedu
cation and behaviour therapy were also given to their family members.
Patients assigned to control group received only standard treatment fo
r schizophrenics in outpatients settings. The basis of all comparisons
between groups were pre-post measurements: data registered before the
rapy and after therapy conclusion. An analysis of the mean scores of c
linical and family measures indicated that the therapy group had impro
ved to a greater extent than the control group.
