Abstract
Molecular dimensions suggest that three crystal forms of the nitric ac id adduct of triphenylarsine oxide have the bridging proton more close ly associated with the As=O group than with the nitrate moiety, wherea s the corresponding phosphorus compound has the proton more closely as sociated with the nitrate moiety. In all cases, strong hydrogen bonds are formed between the two moieties resulting in X-O bonds (where X=As or P) intermediate in character between single and double bonds.
