Abstract
Quantum theory is formulated as the unique way to manipulate amplitude s consistently. The consistency requirement that if an amplitude is ca lculable in two different ways then the two answers must agree leads t o the usual sum and product rules for amplitudes. This implies that th e Schrodinger equation must be linear. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
