Motivation: CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Ar chitecture), as an
open standard, is considered to be a good solution for the development
and deployment of applications in distributed heterogeneous environme
nts. This technology can be applied in the bioinformatics area to enha
nce utilization, management and interoperation between biological reso
urces. Results: This paper investigates issues in developing CORBA app
lications for genome mapping information systems in the Internet envir
onment with emphasis on database connectivity and graphical user inter
faces. The design and implementation of a CORBA prototype for an anima
l genome mapping database are described. Availability: The prototype d
emonstration is available via. http://www.ri.bbsrc.ac.uk/ark_corba/. C
