Energy spectra of backscattered projectile ions for 1960 eV Ne+ incide
nt on a polycrystalline Al surface show an inelasticity of 45 +/- 3 eV
(86 +/- 4 eV) in binary collisions with Al atoms for Ne+ (Ne++). Thes
e inelasticities are attributed to simultaneous excitation of two Ne 2
p electrons of neutralized Ne-0 and surviving Ne+ leading to the forma
tion of Ne* and Ne++* which decay into the final Ne+ and Ne++, respec
tively. A well distinct peak due to double scattering is present in bo
th singly and doubly charged ion spectra. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.
